In every mind, there is a door that has never been opened... What if you could see into the spirit world? What if everybody could, and it was just as easy as opening up a door? Tom (Kevin Bacon) is just an ordinary guy with a wife and a kid and a job working for a Chicago utilities company. One night at a party, he is put into a hypnotic trance by his sister-in-law who, before waking him, suggests that he keep his mind open. That night, Tom begins to have terrible visions: images of violence, of murder, and of a young woman. The young woman is - or was - real, the spirit of a murder victim calling out for help from the living. Tom's son can also see the spirit world, and can actually carry on conversations with the ghosts, but Tom's mind isn't fully open, and his communications with the spirit world are confused and agitated. However, he eventually begins to piece together the murdered woman's story and begins a hunt for her body that puts himself - and his wife - in terrible danger.
