Washington socialite Sally Adams (Ethel Merman, who won a Best Actress Golden Globe Award® for her performance) is what we'd call today a "people person." She loves being around people - particularly Washington power brokers. She hosts endless parties and balls, extravagant "dos" that, combined with her effervescent and extroverted hosting style, make her the toast of the nation's capitol. Eventually, her socializing pays off when she receives an appointment as the United States Ambassador to the tiny country of Lichtenburg. Sally is no less appealing to the Lichtenburgers - she and Foreign Minister Cosmo Constantine (George Sanders) enter into a whirlwind romance, and even Sally's press attaché, Kenneth (Donald O'Connor), gets into the act when Lichtenburg's Princess Maria (Vera-Ellen) falls for him. Foreign relations are no trouble for "Ambassadress" Adams! A film adaptation of the famed Irvin Berlin Broadway smash, and featuring the songs "You're Just in Love," "Can You Use Any Money Today?" and "Hostess With The Mostes' on the Ball," CALL ME MADAM won an Oscar® for Best Scoring of a Musical Picture and was nominated for Best Color Costume Design.
