In this, the sequel to THE YEAR MY VOICE BROKE, it is 1965 rural Australia, and Danny Embling is now in the 5th form at St. Alban’s College, a boys boarding school. Always an outsider, Danny bears the brunt of the boys cruel taunts - a stutter only aggravates his already lowly status. He withdraws into himself until he meets Thandiwe, the daughter of an African academic. Because of her skin colour she is ostracised by the girls at her boarding school and the two are attracted as they recognize kindred spirits.
