Top producer Irwin Winkler makes his directorial debut with this powerful film set against the background of the McCarthy Witch Hunts. The drama focuses on successful film director David Merrill (Robert De Niro) who falls victim to black listing. He is given the chance to save his career. All he has to do is indict his friends and associates in front of the House Un-American Activities Committee and he can start making films again. Many real-life film makers and producers appear in analogous roles including Martin Scorsese and Sam Wanamaker, who suffered under the actual blacklisting of the fifties.
